Artificial Intelligence and Employment Futures for the Arab Region
I’m excited to share the just-published report from the project I completed earlier this year for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Employment Futures for the Arab Region.”
You can download the full report at this link.
This project looked at some of the most important implications of AI on jobs in the Arab region, combining labor market analysis with trend analysis and producing a set of alternative future scenarios set in 2035. It also provides policy and other recommendations for public and private sector leaders.
As the lead author of the report and developer of the scenarios, I had the great fortune of great collaborators:
From ESCWA - Mounir Tabet, Youzhi Zhang, Sama Sleiman, and Roy Doumit
From the International Labour Organization (ILO) - Aya Jaafar, Mustapha ZIROILI, Ph.D., and Amal Mowafy
From IE University’s Center for the Governance of Change - Carlos Luca de Tena Piera and Giaccomo Ugarelli
From the American University of Beirut (AUB) - Professor Mariette Awad Ph.D.
Particular thanks to my two invaluable research assistants at Foresight Vector, Rose Cole and Omar Abdelrahman, for their exceptional work on the research and also on the scenarios, and to Eric Popiel for scenario co-thinking.
This is the fourth in the series of strategic foresight efforts Foresight Vector has conducted for and with ESCWA under its Megatrends Initiative. The reports from the three prior efforts are all available at that link (and posted in prior blogs on the Foresight Vector website). They explored electric mobility, the Metaverse, and artificial intelligence.
I’m grateful for the enduring relationship with ESCWA, and commend their commitment to bringing strategic foresight into the policy-making in 22 countries across the Middle East and North Africa.
